Our own Carrie Kennebeck is passionate about men’s hair so we thought we’d check in with her to talk about current trends, favorite product and what makes for a good haircut.

What do you love about cutting/grooming guys?
I love being able to customize a style according to my male clients’ lifestyle and personality. Mens cutting and styling is all about shape and tailoring their hair to suit features — this is where transformation really happens.

What are some popular styles guys should be thinking of these days?
Everything from side partings, short crops, disconnections with short tapered sides with longer tops worn wavy or sleeked are on trend for spring and summer. Men are loving volume and texture. Facial hair is also playing a huge role in mens style this season with a five o’clock shadow.

How do you approach cuts for your male clients?
When I am cutting hair, I utilize barbering along with current haircutting techniques to create a shape that suits the individual’s style. A good haircut shows through its longevity, ease of styling and overall shape!

Do you have a favorite product for guys?
I love L’oreal Homme 4 MAT, it’s an awesome product for men that can be used in a variety of ways. I use it for my guys on damp hair to create a textured look and combed or blowdryed in for more controlled styles. I also recommend finishing with a little in the hands after its dry to really set the style.

Iconic sixties model Peggy Moffitt was best known for being fashion designer Rudi Gernreich’s muse and the wife of famed photographer William Claxton. But it’s her signature style — dramatic makeup and Vidal Sassoon’s five point asymmetrical haircut — that has made her a beloved favorite of the fashion and beauty worlds. She continues to wear the hair style today, noting that “Sassoon is to hair care what Picasso is to painting.”

Question: What is a mistake people make when trying a new style or stylist?

James Morrison: We try as hard as we can to transform new clients on the first, visit but the process of changing someone’s look or style takes time. We have to get to know you to understand your likes and dislikes and learn about your needs. Our favorite clients – old and new – are open to new ideas, suggestions and looks. They also understand that the journey of creating a new style will take some trial and error. We respond best to clients who resonate with our mission – to create natural hairstyles that suit their lifestyle.
